We all know Nashville is the Music Capitol. However, before I moved to Nashville I thought it was the County Music Capitol. I’m sure many other people across the United States assume this as well, but let’s go ahead and completely disqualify that theory. I’ve seen punk bands, hipster bands, folk bands, indie bands, and many other types of bands perform and succeed in Nashville. I might be a little biased, but Nashville is home for some of the most talented musicians I have seen, and the best part is anyone can usually walk right up to their favorite band after the show and chat!
So today I wanted to share my top three favorite local Nashville bands with you. Go buy their albums or check out a show!
1. The Saint Johns
I actually did not discover this band in Nashville. I was at the 30A Songwriters’ Festival in Destin, FL last January, and I just happened upon them playing a very intimate show. This band is absolutely incredible and not only has great music, but also a hilarious side of entertainment as well. I have never laughed harder during a show than when seeing Jordan Meredith and Louis Johnson add in side comments between songs. On top of the comedic side of their show, their emotion-filled, smooth songs will hook you and have you listening to their EP non-stop for weeks. TRUE STORY: I took my two roommates to their concert this summer and I couldn’t get them to listen to anything else for weeks. But anyways, go check them out. If you get a chance to chat with them afterward, do it because they’re great people!
2. The Shadowboxers
Okay, this is a stretch. The band technically is not from Nashville, but one of the lead singers is, so I’m still including them because they’re incredible performers. I was able to see them at 3rd & Lindsley this summer, and I was blown away! Let’s just say Justin Timberlake has tweeted about their talent multiple times (and now has signed them!!). If you won’t take my word on how great they are, at least respect JT’s stamp of approval. The Shadowboxers are a jazzy, funky band that will have you dancing in your seat with their catchy songs and impressive dance moves. They are playing October 5th at 3rd and Lindsley again, opening for Allen Stone!
3. Penny and Sparrow
Originally from Austin, Texas, they’ve now made Nashville their home! I’m a bit biased because, in college, I interned for their management company, but DAMN these guys are killer. They have the most perfect harmonies and such strong lyrics. Their songs will have you feeling ALL the emotions. I can also vouch for how absolutely hilarious these guys are. They’ll go from singing a melancholy, acoustic song to having the audience in tears with their jokes. They’re solid dudes with solid music– so check ’em out!
Those are my top three bands from Nashville that I have seen while living here. But honestly, every time I get out and go see a show, I’m impressed by whoever is playing because Nashville has incredible musicians!
